Going on a long trip for business or pleasure can involve a lot of planning, and at least a little excitement! Home insurance might be the last thing on your mind, but it’s definitely something you shouldn’t miss off of your to-do list.
You’ve probably already got your hands full organising flights and making arrangements with work, but it’s important not to forget about the home you’ll be leaving behind.
Here are some reasons why getting home insurance is a must before going away…
Protection from disasters
If you’re going to be away from your home for a long time, it will probably take a while before you are aware of any problems or damage to your property. For example, if there’s a big storm or a leak in your roof, your home may become severely damaged during the weeks or months you aren’t there to attend to it, resulting in costly repairs even if the original problem was quite minor. Fortunately, home insurance can help you to cover these costs. Keep in mind that you should always compare home insurance policies to make sure that these kinds of circumstances are covered – some may exclude damage from weather, while others will be invalid if you’re away from home for a period of time.
Protection in case of theft
Unfortunately, empty homes are at a higher risk of being broken into, especially if you’re away for an extended period. While nobody wants to imagine their valuables being stolen, wouldn’t it be better to be able to recoup some costs if this horrible incident does occur? Many home insurance policies will pay out after a burglary, but particularly expensive items may have to be insured separately. Always check to see if your policy has a single item limit or excludes certain types of items from its cover.

Peace of mind
It’s normal to worry about your home while you’re away. While home insurance won’t get rid of all your concerns, it can at least help you to feel financially secure. You’ll be safe in the knowledge that if something does happen to your home, your home insurance provider will be there to help. You could also ask a friend or family member to check up on the place from time to time. This will mean they can look out for potential issues and take photos to help you make a claim on your insurance if you need to.
Invalid policy
Some home insurance policies will be invalid if your home is empty for a long time. This means you’ll need to find a new policy that will cover your empty home for the duration of your trip. Because empty homes do have extra risks attached to them as mentioned above, you may be paying a higher premium. However, if it’s just for a short period of time, you’ll just have to factor this cost into your budget. It’s much better to pay a little extra for home insurance than find out you need to shell out thousands to resolve flood damage.
