T has now been swimming for over three years, with his first lesson occurring when he was less than a year old. Although it’s not ‘proper’ swimming (I’m talking front crawl, breast stroke, etc), T now knows what to do if he were to fall into water, and his confidence whilst in the water gives me confidence! He genuinely enjoys being in water – even from a young age.

This year, we became SwimFin ambassadors. If you’ve not heard of SwimFin, they’re the creators of the unique shaped Shark Fin swimming aid; created to give confidence to nervous swimmers whilst maintaining natural swim positions. Simply place the SwimFin high on the child’s back and no matter what stroke they’re performing they will be fully supported in the water.

Now, you may be wondering why we would be ambassadors for a swimming aid, however what you might not realise about SwimFin is that they also provide tools for more confident swimmers or those that no longer require their SwimFin! In addition, we’ve been somewhat lucky when it comes to T’s confidence in the water – other’s aren’t so lucky and for them; a SwimFin might be their first opportunity to enjoy the water properly, so we wanted to help with that.

Swim Fin

Made from EVA Foam, the SwimFin can take up to 16 stone in weight whilst in the water. Simply place it high on the swimmer’s back (never the front) using the two velcro straps provided (larger straps are also available) and you’re ready to go. It never has to be inflated or deflated, and it allows the swimmer’s arms to be free at all times – unlike arm bands or floatation rings.

Although T used his as more of a toy in nana’s pool (baby shark, anyone?), we decided the person who would get the most use out of the Swim Fin would be his cousin. Although M enjoys being in the water, he generally prefers it when he can touch the floor with his arms or legs – which isn’t ideal in a public pool or worse; the sea, which are a lot deeper than nana’s pool. We wanted to see if the Swim Fin would work with an older child (M is 6 years old) who has their wits about them.

As soon as we gave M a Swim Fin to use he immediately changed the way he behaved in the water. He not only took his arms and feet off the floor of the pool, but he got involved in pool games. Before, he might have taken his time in fear of falling over in the pool. With the Swim Fin he was jumping around, even diving and sliding down the slide front ways. It was incredible to watch.

Dinky Divers

As mentioned before, T doesn’t really need the assistance of a swimming aid – although the Swim Fin is a lot of fun and T enjoyed playing Sharks with his cousins or having fun just floating on his front. For T, he’s at the stage where he wants to dive user water or doggy paddle across the pool. Which is where the Dinky Divers and Flunky Floaties come in handy.

Starting with Dinky Divers, these four brightly coloured creatures (a Sea Horse, Seal, Hippo & Shark) sink to the bottom of the pool to encourage diving, but because they stand up straight under water they build confidence gradually and encourage swimmers to practice easy retrieval of items.

T and his cousins had a lot of fun with this, with M often throwing the divers and T going to retrieve them. With the Swim Fin on, M even gave it a try.

Funky Floaties

Similar to the Dinky Divers, the Funky Floaties are another style of swimming tool, although can be used simply as a fun toy in the pool to encourage confidence. Made from soft, neoprene fabric, these toys float in the water nicely and are UV and Water resistant.

The main aim of these colourful creatures (a Dolphin, Crab, Turtle & Penguin) is to encourage the swimmer’s face into the water to retrieve the floaties but they’re also fun to swim towards or simply to play catch with.

We really enjoyed playing with these tools in the water and it certainly added something different to the water. The boys found a reason to dive and swim around and for M he found a whole new confidence in the water!
