It’s safe to say that when T started school a little part of me had been taken away. For the past three and a bit years we had a good routine and I had the opportunity to still be with him for a decent amount of time as well as work three to five days a week.
But, for the past few weeks, I’ve come to realise that T being in school is actually pretty handy, and after the novelty of school runs wore off I started to relax and take full advantage of the spare time I suddenly had!
Don’t get me wrong, I still miss our days out and relaxing mornings together – especially as I still have no clue what he gets up to – but having spare time and being able to things I wasn’t able to do previously has certainly softened the blow.
I’d love to know if you can relate to any of these.
More spare time
Although I have the same amount of time between getting up and going to work, because T is gone before 10:00am I can get home and get almost triple the amount of work done as I no longer have any interruptions!
In the same few hours I had previously, I now give Oscar longer walks in the mornings, make (decent) lunches, cook dinner for Sharon and I, housework, and even get on with some writing or bullet journaling!
Headspace
On the same note, because I have more available time, I’m not rushed. I also have room to make mistakes or change plans suddenly (I even went to the shop the other day to buy an aubergine! Just because I could.)
I’ve felt my anxiety drop somewhat, and if I just don’t feel like engaging or answering questions I don’t! I can just lie on the sofa until I need to leave for work.
Me time
Each week I have two whole days off and these days are priceless. Once the boy is dropped off at school I am free to do whatever I want, when I want, and at my own pace.
More often than not I’ll be doing something blog related, but other times I might do some gardening, take Oscar on an extra-long walk, or maybe even do some baking. This week, I’ve booked myself in for a massage!
On top of this, I found my self drinking hot drinks, making decent breakfasts and eating it at a more reasonable hour, getting jobs done that I haven’t previously been able to do at all, and generally getting everything back in order once again!
While writing this, I also asked a couple of friends for their thoughts – here’s what they have been enjoying with their extra time…

Don’t get me wrong, I still miss the little wotsit when he’s at school, but finding these few plus points – no matter how small – has made the transition so much easier on my part!
Can you relate to any of this?
