Shining a Spotlight on How to Light Up Your Child’s Room

Even from a surprisingly young age (Threenager, anyone?) kids naturally desire a place that they can go to enjoy privacy. A safe, personal space. This is why, while the nursery design was probably all on you, the chances are that your kids will soon develop very clear ideas of what they want from their rooms. And, for the most part, it’s probably best that you help them to bring those designs to life.

However, to ensure a truly beautiful space that functions as well as it possibly can, it’s also worth keeping control over aspects like lighting yourself.

Whether the time they spend in their rooms happens in the morning, after school or before bed, ensuring the ideal lighting for every purpose is the best possible way to make this a functional, appealing space. Heck, even jungle themed wallpaper can look great in the right light! The question is, what exactly does the ‘right light’ entail for a fantastic kids room?

Keep it soft

Soft lighting is essential for any kids room. Ensuring a soft, cosy feeling that doesn’t overstimulate and keep you all up at night. Luckily, with plenty of bulbs now designed to provide soft, sandy lighting you can easily ensure the quality of light needed here by shopping around. Shades and dimmer switches also play a key role. Especially enabling time-sensitive lighting that provides visibility when you need it, and the most gentle possible atmosphere when not.

Be aware of natural light

Time outdoors is essential for healthy children, but the benefits of the sun don’t end when you close the door. Even inside, natural light is better for children’s eyes and emotional wellness. Large windows are obviously a plus, but can be enhanced by making sure to wisely position the room around natural light flow (eg. moving toy boxes/seating directly opposite windows). Equally, the addition of skylights where possible can not only provide a focal point, but also dramatically increase the natural light in the space. Just make sure that you invest in a decent set of blackout blinds to avoid this benefit from backfiring when morning rolls around!

Always avoid heat

Old lightbulbs can become dangerously hot. Not only posing a significant burn risk to curious young fingers, but also becoming a potential fire hazard when left unattended. Make sure to overcome this issue by replacing all lights in your child’s room with heat-free modern options. For example, an LED lightbulb or even a CFL light fitting. This way, you can rest easy. Not only that lights, which are often left on accidentally, are functioning as efficiently as possible (LED bulbs reduce energy usage by as much as 75%), but also that heat is never a risk regardless of usage time.

Lighting can make a huge difference in transforming any space. But considering the safety and practicality of lighting additions in your kids rooms is especially fundamental for the safe haven that most youngsters desire. So, go on and let it shine.
