Staying Healthy Whilst Working From Home

A lot of us have been working from home lately. It certainly isn’t easy. But with many companies wanting to continue this long-term, it may have shaken a lot of things up and made life feel a little bit harder once again. There is however a way to stay healthy whilst you are still working from home, and here are some valuable tips for you.

Working from home seems to have only advantages, because you do not have to rent an office or clinic and you do not have to spend precious hours on the roads and in traffic jams, but there is still one problem: How can you maintain healthy weight when the refrigerator is available all day?

Here are six tips that can help…

1. Plan regular meal times during the day to enclose the temporary entrance to the kitchen

For example, a snack between morning and noon (at 11ish), and a snack between noon and evening 2 or 3 hours after lunch. Such a snack can be a slice of bread with cheese, for example, fruit with nuts or yogurt with fruit, some olives etc. It allows our abnormalities to be controlled, increases the feeling of satiety and provides fuel to our brain (which works very hard after all) on a regular basis.

2. Do not eat while working, certainly do not eat in front of the computer!

When eating, it is important to take a break from work to allow us to concentrate on eating and the pleasure it gives us. Do not deceive yourself that ‘you will have more if you work and eat at the same time’. If you are distracted while eating, you will not be satisfied, and you will want to eat more.

3. Keep healthy foods at home

You will want to buy in foods specifically for this, if not, you will find you reach for sugar fixes instead.

4. Drink a lot of water

Drinking is important to us and keeps our bodies from dehydrating and stops us feeling sluggish too early on in the day. It is recommended to keep a bottle of water on the desk, and occasionally get up to make tea without the addition of sugar.

5. Take breaks for stretching and light activity

It’s hard to sit all day, and it’s also unhealthy. These breaks should also be planned and time-bounded, like meal times. Walk around the house, go down with the garbage, go get mail and go for a little walk locally.

Another benefit: If you are at home, you have the option to plan your time in a way that will also allow for regular exercise. Yoga or Pilates, try and get moving somehow!

6. Getting into a work atmosphere

While we work, we are not really ‘at home’. We should dress as if we were going to work, including putting on make-up – and therefore really putting ourselves in the mood of work.
