Last weekend, we were invited down to Hove Lawns for the return of Zippo’s Circus after a long 18-month hiatus.
We’ve always enjoyed visiting the circus. It’s something that, for us adults, takes us back to our childhood. For children, it’s something fun and exciting that takes your imagination on an exciting adventure.
This year was especially exciting, what with the Tokyo Olympics in full swing. Being able to witness acrobatics and aerialists live after watching them on TV made the experience that extra bit special.
Carnival!
This year, Zippo’s new ‘Carnival’ tour takes you around the world with the help of their newly appointed, multi-talented ringmaster, Paulo Dos Santos! A firm favourite with fans of the show, Paulo has been with Zippo’s Circus for several years, however this will be his first year as Ringmaster on the show.
Paulo presents a fast-moving spectacle like no other as astonishing acrobats and aerialists, comics and daredevil motorcyclists come together from all corners of the world for this year’s colourful production.
As if nothing had changed, when the show starts you’re immediately taken on a wild ride. Starting with the Wheel of Steel, where even I let out a few gasps, the show invites you to witness death-defying tricks at great heights and speeds. Throughout the show you’re also invited to laugh out loud (and take as many photos as you like!) and just have a real good time.
Despite restrictions, Zippo’s have put on an incredible show with lots of new (for us anyway!) acts as well as fresh new tricks for those returning.
Safety measures
It goes without saying that there are obviously a few changes in place, aside from the Ringmaster! To make sure that everyone is kept safe, Zippo’s have implemented the following restrictions:
- Limited seating capacity on all shows.
- Groups are kept to spaced-out ‘bubbles’, which means no crossover seating issues. (During our show we experienced an issue with someone moving seats, however staff dealt with this very quickly.)
- Temperature checks before every show.
- Sanitiser stations dotted throughout the tent.
- Masks are required throughout the show (unless exempt). Staff also wear masks / shields.
- One way system in place in regards to entrances and exits.
It was a real treat to be back under the circus tent once again. We genuinely didn’t know whether they would have made it back for another year what with travel restrictions.
It really was a joy to see the return of our favourites, such as The Globe of Speed, as well as witness a number of new acts, such as The Flying Machine.
